Schrijver Rob Hendriks werkte veertien jaar aan het verhalende naslagwerk. De Zaanse popmuziek heeft vanaf het begin een prominente rol gespeeld in de Nederlandse popgeschiedenis. Nagenoeg iedereen kent namen als De Dijk, Lucifer, Margriet Eshuijs, Dizzy Man’s Band, Roberto Jacketti & The Scooters, Reniet Vrieze, Ruben Hoeke en natuurlijk George Baker. Maar ook in het niet-commerciële circuit blinkt Zaanstad uit met groepen als De Kift en The Ex. In de hiphop en R&B, tegenwoordig commercieel de meest succesvolle muzieksoort, is Zaanstad vanaf het begin (eind jaren tachtig) prominent aanwezig met groepen en collectieven als Da Grizzlies, The Coalition, Avalanche (winnaar grote Prijs van Nederland...
