Christopher Street Day (CSD) is an annual European LGBTQ+ celebration and demonstration held in various cities across Europe for the rights of LGBTQ+ people, and against discrimination and exclusion. The CSD is held in memory of the Stonewall Riots, the first big uprising of LGBT people against police assaults that took place at the Stonewall Inn, a bar on Manhattan, New York City's Christopher Street in the district of Greenwich Village on June 28, 1969. On Saturday, June 27, 1970, marches to mark the first anniversary of Stonewall were held in Chicago and San Francisco, followed on Sunday, June 28, 1970, by the Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade in New York and the Christopher Street West Association Parade in Los Angeles; the four gatherings were the first Pride parades in United States history. In the 19th century, a hirsute aboriginal woman from Mexico named Julia Pastrana was billed on the freak-show circuit as “The Ugliest Woman in the World.” Brought to Europe, she performed according to Victorian norms: singing and dancing, speaking in foreign languages, undergoing public medical examinations, and other spectacle entertainments. Both in her lifetime and posthumously, she was labelled “ugly.” This word has medieval Norse roots meaning “to be feared or dreaded.” “Ugly” associations leave behind a trail of bedfellows: monstrous, grotesque, deformed, freak, degenerate, handicapped. With its storied history, ugliness grows from many sources: from Aristotle who called women “deformed” men, to medieval transformation tales of hags-turned-beauties, to 18th-century caricatures, 19th-century freak shows, 20th-century “degenerate” art and people, Brutalist architecture, and more. June 2021, Dearest Citizen of the Falling World, So… The Africa-trip I planned for 2020 got cancelled. As was the needle-drop party for “MINEO”. As was the entire tour promoting that very same “MINEO”. Instead, I wandered the fields nearby my house. During that first lockdown in The Netherlands, things changed. Sure, there was this pandemic breathing down our necks, but Nature also healed. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, my dog was as happy as a schoolboy. And there were no cars. There were no airplanes. There was hissing of grass and birds and feathers in sublime sunlight. And that was the world outside. A new world full of natural wonder just in reach... However, we couldn't take the freshness of the world outside with us into our houses, since, it didn’t take very long before the conspiracies started to pop up on the internet.
